ABOUT

Hailey offers free 24-hour community food waste drop-off sites. This program allows our community to drop off residential food scraps to be made into compost. There are currently four bins located throughout Hailey.

The collected food scraps are brought to Winn's Compost to be turned into rich, nutrient-dense soil right here in the Wood River Valley! Keeping food scraps out of the garbage helps prevent potent greenhouse gases from being released when food breaks down in the landfill.

HOW TO OPEN BINS

WHAT GOES IN THE BINS?

We accept:

Fruit and vegetable scraps, peelings, pits, and seeds
Eggshells and nutshells
Rice, pasta, cereal
Bread, pastries, cookies
Coffee grounds and coffee filters
Meat, fish, bones
Dairy products
Teabags
Cut or dry flowers
Paper napkins, paper towels, paper plates
Wooden coffee stirrers

We DO NOT accept:

Pet waste
Yard waste
Cigarette butts
Dryer lint
Plastic bags

COMPOST TIPS

We accept BPI-certified compostable bags, these are a great way to line your countertop compost bins.

A bin that has a secure lid should not create any more odors than when your food scraps are placed directly in the trash. Oftentimes, putting food scraps in a separate container can even help reduce odors in your home!

Another great way to store food scraps is to keep them in a container in your freezer until you're ready to drop them off. A great solution is to store your scraps in a paper bag, and then drop the whole bag right into our drop-off bins.
